Current Event: 9/30/2015

The title of my Topic is called “Female coaches file discrimination suit against University of Minnesota. With the University of Minnesota-Duluth, three former women head coaches are suing the school, alleging discrimination under Title VII and Title IX and saying they were fired because they are female and gay.

Suing the Board of Regents, two of the plaintiffs said they were fired also because they were Canadian. Also, two of them claim age discrimination because they are older than 40. Due to this situation, the three former coaches: Shannon Miller, Jen Banford and Annette Wiles left in the past year after suffering what they describe as a pattern of hostility and making complaints that went unanswered at Minnesota University.

Lendley Black, a University Chancellor, said the school proves the claims of discrimination and allegations will “aggressively defend” itself in the lawsuit.

Also, Black said “UMD continues its focus and commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion, and I am personally committed to continuing an environment where diversity is embraced”. The case was filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Minnesota.

When the university informed Shannon Miller, they would not renew her contract at 51 years old and the head coach of women’s hockey team until December. Jen Banford, the head women’s softball coach, was notified in  December, that her contract would not be renewed. This was because she supported Miller, because she was a gay Canadian woman. Lastly, Wiles, he head women’s basketball coach, that has took the team to playoffs, for seven years said she was forced to resign in June because of “the hostile and discriminatory environment created by the university.”

In conclusion, people dedicated to the school, such as:the Athletic Director, Josh Berlo and the Assistant Director, Abbey Strong began to exclude gays or lesbian coaches  from the school. Due to help create a hostile environment that spread throughout the Athletics Department. This situation does not effect me at all but I do believe that this situation is unnecessary because it’s not right to judge people at all. Just people someone likes the same sex, they shouldn’t be punished for it. Yes, people will feel some type of way but they should keep it to their self. This may impact the world because discrimination of others people sexualty is happening all over the world, all the time. Though, I am a Christian and I still think that bringing something like this into someone’s career is very wrong. More and more jobs are lost everyday because of reasonable reasons. You’re messing up people’s careers and futures just because of who they want to love.

The Kentucky County Clerk, Kim Davis, says she’s been called Hitler,a homophobe and a hypocrite all because she refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Kim Davis had this to say to ABC,in an exclusive interview on Tuesday, ”I have been called things and names that I didn’t even say when I was in the world,” Those names don’t hurt me.” Davis had tearfully said that those names don’t define her.

Davis also had this to say,”What probably hurts me the worst,” she said, “is when someone tells me that my God does not love me or that my God is not happy with me, that I am a hypocrite of a Christian.” However, earlier this month, after the federal judge found her in contempt of court and sent her to jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples,Davis had became a political lightning rod, lionized by supporters and slammed by critics in the Rowan County, Kentucky. Davis has also stated that, issuing the licenses would violate her conscience and against her religion.

On September 8,the judge released her from jail, also saying he was satisfied her deputies had fulfilled her office’s obligations to issue the licenses. Therefore, Kim Davis cannot interfere with the deputies of herself in issuing marriage licenses to all legally eligible couples.

To me this issue is unnecessary, because people to me have that their own issue and others should mind their own. There is no reason,i believe that Kim Davis should be called names just because she believes in something that others not might believe in. Kim Davis, business is her own business and she can do what she wants, even if others don’t agree with it. Now,this event doesn’t really affect me but I do believe that this situation is uncalled for. However, I do think that this situation does have an impact on the world.

Some people may feel the same way as Kim Davis feels and wouldn’t want to be called those names ,at all in life because it’s disrespectful. People are reading and hearing about this situation and thinking to thereself “I don’t understand why would people would be attacking me for something I believe in, it’s my life”.

Carcinogens Assignment

A Carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that is agent directly involved in causing cancer. Causing Cancer may be due to the ability of damage the genome or disruption of cellular metabolic processes. Several substances that are radioactive are considered carcinogens, but the carcinogenic activity is attributed of the radiation. For example:Gamma Rays and Alpha particles, which emit. Also, common examples of non-radioactive carcinogens are inhaled by asbestos, certain dioxins, and mostly tobacco smoke. However, although the public generally associates carcinogenicity with the synthetic chemicals, it is mostly equally to rise in both natural and synthetic substances. Carcinogens are not exactly necessarily  toxic, immediately, but therefore the effect can be insidious. Also the pubic associates generally with carcinogens of synthetic chemicals,it’s equally to rise with both natural and synthetic substances. Sometimes, carcinogens may usually increase the risk, that is high of cancer by altering cellular metabolism or damaging the DNA directly in the cells, which it will mostly interfere with the biological process and it induces the uncontrolled, and malignant division, of ultimately leading to the formation of tumors. There are two types of the carcinogen. The Direct-acting carcinogens, and Indirect-active carcinogen. The Direct are reactive to electrophiles and the Indirect generally are unreactive water-insoluble compounds. All chemical carcinogens act as mutagens and mostly, the mutagenicity of most compound identifies as carcinogen for experimental animals has been demonstrated in simple bacterial essays. This happens from the mutagenic potential of the compounds that is roughly proportional to carcinogen potential.

Today, I will be talking about a “Phoenix Police Officer Shot During Traffic Stop”. A Phoenix Police Officer was shot and severely hurt while making a traffic stop early Wednesday.

An officer whose name wasn’t released was shot while initiating a traffic stop in Phoenix around 2:45am. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital in serious conditions, but is expected to have a good recovery. Also.policemen said the shooter or shooters fled, but their vehicle was found abandoned.

This situation doesn’t really have any more details of the situation. There was no facts on what the traffic was stopped for or  what might have led to the shooting. Phoenix Police, Howard said “investigators were tracking down leads, but no suspects were immediately named. What I feel about this event is wondering. This situation reveals no facts and also, you can’t solve it. Also, situation does make me think.  One thing that I have to say is “I’m glad the police officer was wearing his (body armor) vest”, because who knows what could’ve happened to him.

However,I do believe this event may affect the world because people will now start to worry. Also, people when people read this in the newspaper and watch this on t.v, they will start to check their surroundings. Such as: being in a traffic stop or in a store. In conclusion,be safe during traffic jams and take extra precaution around the traffic officers.

Oregon Officers Turn In Police Chief, Allege Racism
The police officer in Clatskanie, Oregon, filed a formal complaint when he allegedly heard the city’s police chief making racist comments.”I had to do this,” he told CNN affiliate KOIN, but he said the aftermath hasn’t been easy.”I’ve received death threats, a tire flattened with a nail on my driveway,” he said. “My kids, they’re afraid to
go outside.”
Stone’s complaint, filed along with a complaint from another officer over the summer, says that Clatskanie’s then-police chief, Marvin Hoover, compared African-Americans to monkeys, made monkey sounds and sang “Dixie” while being debriefed on the arrest of a woman who had said she was discriminated against.”While Chief Hoover was scratching and chanting, he started to move around the room, in a dance or jumping fashion. While jumping and moving about the room, Chief Hoover momentarily beat his chest like Tarzan,” Stone’s complaint said.
“As Chief Hoover was comparing African-Americans to monkeys, I began to become extremely uncomfortable. I have never been in a work environment where a manager, especially an executive officer, is openly racist.”Stone said he tried to continue questioning Hoover but was interrupted again.”This time Chief Hoover said, ‘That’s what they deserve,’ ” Stone says. Then, according to the police officer, he started singing the words to “Dixie” while pumping his fist as though he were punching someone.Officer Zack Gibson also filed a complaint with the same allegations.”Officer Stone brushed aside the antic but I could observe that it bothered him,” he wrote. “At the same time I was in disbelief that the Chief of Police was acting in such a manner while an officer is concerned he may be accused of racism.”Hoover could not be immediately reached for comment.
This event hurts me a little bit because I feel like it’s about time that we U.S. citizens stick together as a nation and stop discriminating. It’s 2015,I feel as though the racism towards all racist should be over and forgotten about. This event affects me in many ways because I’m African American. Also if this chief can discriminate against the African Americans in his town, then why wouldn’t someone discriminate against someone like him. This event impact on the world because slavery is over. We have all the same rights as everyone else. I hope this will stop soon, because there’s no reason for it to go on. In conclusion, the right actions were taken,by firing that chief because there should be consequences for discriminating against a different race than your own.

Current Event Report 9/4

The topic of my story is a about student planning a shooting. The topic of my story is called “The Shooting Threat On Snapchat Prompts Arrest, Suspension. The 16-year-old is a student at Sierra Linda High School, which is part of the Tolleson Union High School District. According to the authorities,a teenager posted a picture on Snapchat that showed all students in the hallway and then added the text “Planning the school shooting.”
Sierra Linda parent,Gabriel Ruelas had this to say, “It is kinda scary. A little bit, ya know? Especially when you don’t know how serious kids are,”. “You don’t want to hear that stuff come around at your kids’ schools,” Sierra Linda dad David Pays agreed. Also, another student in Colorado saw the Snap and contacted the local authorities who then reached out to the Phoenix Police Department. “That’s definitely pretty brave,” Ruelas said. “Ya know, most kids don’t, they just kind of stay to themselves and don’t say nothing.”
The parents of the school had received an audio message from the school’s principal Wednesday.
“This is Mr. Madrid, the Principal of Sierra Linda with a very important message. I want to inform you of a threat that was made to our school through social media and reported to us yesterday. One of our students made a written threat on Snapchat that was seen by a teenager in Colorado. That Colorado teenager reported the threat to her local police department, who then reported it to the Phoenix Police Department. Our School Resource Officer investigated and was able to identify the student. The student was detained and taken into custody. I want to assure you that at no time was SLHS, students, or staff in any danger. The safety of our students and staff is of great importance to us. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your continued support of SLHS.”
The Police Department told us the teenager owned up to posting the picture but claimed it was just a prank. Therefore, the student was arrested for creating a hoax, and also the school said they do not believe any students could ever be in danger, and threats are not tolerated and the teen has been suspended.
The cops, his classmates and their parents did not think it was that funny at all and it could be real. How does this event affect me? To me,I don’t think that is a joking matter, because obviously if you think about it, there’s been a lot of shootings outside of school and a lot of threats. You never know what can go wrong and because this could happen at my school, and I definitely wouldn’t want that at my school ever in life. Also, this could happen at any school in the world and no one wants that.
Snapchat is a mobile messaging app that is particularly popular with teens and young adults. It basically allows users to send photos and videos that are deleted within seconds. Within Snaps, which last up to 10 seconds, users also can send Stories, which are Snaps that last for up to 24 hours! Although Snaps vanish from Snapchat’s servers, there is nothing to stop users from capturing screenshots of Snaps on their phones.

Stages of Grief

The Stages of Grief in Swallowing Stones

In 1969, Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross presented her findings on grief in her book On Death and Dying. Her premise was that everyone faced with loss or death travels through five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. For a simplified description of each of these stages, read the following page: The 5 Stages of Grief .

As you read, find a character going through each stage and write an excerpt (text support) from the novel which illustrates this stage. Fill in the following chart. Remember, these stages can be applied to loss as well as grief.

Book Review Over Swallowing Stones

There’s this book called Swallowing Stones and it’s so mysterious and captivating. I know you wonder why it’s called this, but as you read it,you soon will understand why! After I read a chapter after chapter,I never wanted to put it down. The whole story takes place in the summer of Briarwood, New Jersey. A young boy named Michael Mackenzie received a new Winchester Rifle from his  grandfather. The novel starts off with Michael Mackenzie carelessly shooting off his rifle; but what Michael does not know is that his bullet traveled far enough in the air and ended up hitting an innocent man that was fixing his roof.
The innocent man that was killed has a daughter named Jenna Ward.Jenna’s has been completely hurt  and can’t believe what has happened to her father. Jenna’s relationship between her boyfriend and friends starts to change. This occurs because Jenna starts having dreams about Michael, the boy she has never met. Later, Joe, who is Michael’s best friend, helps him try to cover up Michael’s crime. Quickly they both try  to figure out a plan and quickly put in into motion. However, as Michael begins to understand the fact of his crime, he begins to feel really guilty and hates the fact that he is lying to everyone, including the cops. You can tell that he’s getting tired of it and doesn’t want to lie anymore,to anyone.
In addition, Michael feels bad to the innocents man’s family, especially for Jenna (the man’s daughter) that also attends his school. Since the novel starts to drift back and forth between what Michael is going through and what Jenna is going through, the reader gets a through an understanding of how both characters are feeling and what they go through as they try to cope with this tragedy. If you are a big fan of suspicious books, then I would definitely recommend this book to you. It’s a powerful story, that brings guilt from a crime,to life.
